Pronounce /k/ in cot and /g/ in got

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

How to make the /k/ and /g/ sounds:

/k/ and /g/ are pronounced with identical mouth positions, but /k/ is not voiced and /g/ is.

To make the /k/ sound, air is briefly prevented from leaving the vocal tract when the back of the tongue lifts and presses against the soft palate at the back of the mouth. The sound is aspirated (you release air).

To make the /g/ sound, you do the same tongue lift in the back of the throat, but you use the vocal cords to make a sound.

Kate could not believe her luck. Her grandparents gave her a trip to Greece as a graduation present. She had always dreamed of going to Greece. The summer she graduated, in August, Kate flew to Corfu and as soon as she landed she drove to her guesthouse right on the coast. Clad in a gold bikini, Kate swam all afternoon until the light grew dim. Back at the guesthouse, she grabbed a glass of wine, ate a huge crab, a baguette and some grapes for dinner, and watched the sun sink in a pink sky. This was as good as it gets, she thought.
