And you thought an L was an L!
The light /ɭ/ sound in like appears at the beginning of a word or before a vowel. Bring the tip of the tongue up (and only the tip) to touch the roof of the mouth right behind the top teeth. The back of the tongue is low and the entire tongue is tense.
The dark /ɭ/ sound in girl usually appears at the end of the word, but also after vowels and before consonants in the middle of the word. The back of the tongue arches up as if you were swallowing something. The tongue only comes up to touch the roof of the mouth at the very end of the sound, or not at all.

A beautiful tall girl was at the pool playing volleyball with her friends. She had a lean belly, dark hair, and full lips. All the men at the pool couldn’t keep their eyes off her as she laughed and played with the other girls. The volleyball got hit into the shallow water and the whole male population at the pool jockeyed to help her get the ball. One man even fell into the pool. The girl’s friends laughed knowingly as one lucky man offered the ball back to her.
