How to form the /a/ caught /æ/sounds:
The /a/ sound in caught is long and comes from the back of the mouth. The lips and the tongue are relaxed.
The /æ/ in cat is short and comes from the front of the mouth. The lips are tight and the mouth is stretched open.
The jaw actually moves forward or back to make these two sounds.

My daughter, Ann, started a band and her dad is beside himself. He says that being in a band is too flashy and will get out of hand. He’s worried that she’ll get caught up in a bad crowd. I’m worried about her schoolwork, that the time she takes on band practice will tamper with her education. It really ought not to; she’s a fast learner and is especially good in math. She’s already bought a guitar, got the garage set up for practices, and has a drummer, vocalist, and saxophone player lined up. The cat’s out of the bag and I’m afraid there’s no turning back.
