Pronounce /eɪ/ in bait and /ɛ/ in bet

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

How to make the /eɪ/ and /ɛ/ sounds:

The /eɪ/ sound in bait is long and is a diphthong, a merging of two vowel sounds in the same syllable, the sounds /ɛ/ and /ɪ/. Start your mouth in the position for /ɛ/, then stretch your lips wide and close your mouth a little for the /ɪ/. The tongue touches the sides of the upper teeth.

The /ɛ/ in bet is a short sound. The middle of the tongue rounds slightly up and the lips and the jaw are loose and relaxed.

Practice Reading:

Dave couldn’t wait for the weekend. It was a hot Saturday in September when he met his best mates at the lake for a camping trip. When they got there, they all jumped into the lake, swam, and raced around the dock all day. When the light faded, their energy waned, and it was time to eat. They had brought huge red steaks, a cake that Ted had baked, and a keg of ale for dinner. After they ate, they set up a tent, built a fire, sang songs and drank the ale. It was a great day.
